Unlocked Cell Phones

What is an Unlocked Cell Phone

It is a cell phone that can be used with a varity of GSM-compatible carriers worldwide. GSM stands for Global System for mobile communications (GSM = Groupe Spécial Mobile) which is the most popular.

The mobile phone or mobile is also called a wireless, cellular phone, cell phone, or cell, and is a long-range, portable electronic device used for mobile communication.

It’s important to have an unlock cell phone so that it can work with any GSM network, in your home country, or anywhere else in the world. If your phone uses the same frequency bands, it usually works on any other GSM network after you have unlocked it. Even if you own a GSM type cellphone that you purchased at a discounted price when you signed up for service, it’s probable that the cell phone company locked your phone so it will only work within their particular service.

Its fairly easy to simply and quickly unlock your phone to have an unlocked cell phone so you can use it with any GSM service provider and SIM, anywhere in the world.  A SIM (subscriber identity module) is part of a removable smart card ICC (Integrated Circuit Card), also known as SIM Cards.  Although phones should be unlocked naturally, often times, a service provider will lock them. When cell phones are unlocked, they can be used with any SIM from any cellphone service provider as long as the cellphone service provider has compatible GSM service on the same frequency bands that the phone can operate on.

Why do cell phone service providers electronically lock the phone? Obviously, it must be so that it can only be used with their service. As an added bonus to those service providers, locking your phone forces you to pay the high roaming charges when you take your phone out of their network and use it elsewhere in the world.

At least this locking of your cell phone is reversible. Some phones, allow you to simply enter an unlocking password code into the phone and it immediately unlocks your phone to have an unlocked cell phone. To unlock other cell phones you will need to be connected up to a special unlocking data terminal.

If you want to check if your cell phone is unlocked, borrow a SIM from a friend who has an account with a different wireless service provider and see if it works in your phone or not. If your phone works, as it is your friends phone with that phone's number, then your phone is already unlocked.

GSM phones can usually be unlocked but if your phone is not a GSM phone, then the chances of unlock your phone are slim. The unlocking of cell phones doesn't really apply to non-GSM phones, because your phone number and account is connected to your phone, not to the SIM chip that is inside it.

The main companies that offer GSM service in the USA are AT&T, Cingular, and T-Mobile. The other companies such as Sprint, Nextel, and Verizon, etc, do not have GSM service so your phone can't be unlocked.

So having an Unlocked Cell Phone is not as complicated as it may of sounded.
